Challenge One: Keeping the Grass Short and Sweet!
The key to it all is to keep plenty of open heathland areas, so that the animals have enough to eat. Heather and grass do well if they are kept short. Sheep, deer and ponies are excellent natural grass-cutters! They also eat other young juicy plants before they get a chance to grow too big. And they leave behind their droppings which feed the soil! So it is good to have just the right number of sheep, deer and ponies on the common.
