Challenge Four: Invading Rhododendrons!
The worst plant baddie on the Common is the rhododendron. It was brought to Britain by Victorian plant collectors and now it has spread into the wild. People like rhododendrons because they have big colourful flowers but they are bad news for the native Quantock plants. They spread quickly, and their large, evergreen leaves block out the light, their roots can also poison the nearby soil meaning other plants cannot grow. They soon crowd out the other plants, and would take over the Hills if they weren’t controlled.
