Soils of the Wooded Combes
The steep-sided combes are very sheltered. The trees have never been cleared and the ground has never been ploughed. The soil has developed without disturbance. Every year, new soil is created from dead leaves and rotten wood.
This soil is called ‘brown earth’. All sorts of wild plants and fungi grow in it.
