Soil of the Plantations
In the plantations, most of the trees are conifers.
The conifers have altered the soil.
The pine needles that drop from the trees take a long time to rot down. They make a layer covering the ground, and they make the soil acid.
Soil in the plantations is often poor. This is because hardly any light gets through, so green plants can't grow. With no new green plants there is no plant material to rot down and enrich the soil.
