A Special Place
The Shape of the Quantocks
The Quantocks are a ridge of hills about 19 km long, 5 km wide and up to 384m high. They have an area of 99 km². The ridge runs from the north-west to the south-east. The highest land is in the north. The southern hills are gentler. The western slopes are the steepest. The hills are surrounded by lower-lying farmland. Villages nestle round the edges of the hills.
The Look of the Quantocks
The Quantocks are famous for beautiful scenery. The special "look" of the Hills varies from place to place. Scenery and the way we use the land depends on the rocks under it, the soil that forms on top, and the way that water changes things.
